Typically, in my teaching experience, I have had a block for each subject in the day-Reading time, Writing time, Social Studies time, you get the idea. But with more and more constraints being added to the day, that just wasn't feasible in the day. Not to mention the fact, that it didn't make sense to me. Reading shouldn't be looked at as a separate subject to be studied because it is in every subject! Therefore it should just work into everything! It is for that reason that my teaching partner and I have worked very hard to just integrate everything.
What does that look like?
This week we are studying main idea as well as the three Native American tribes from Tennessee. So rather than teach main idea and pull some random passages, we are going to teach main idea with our Social Studies passages. Our kids will read about Native Americans then write the main idea of those passages.
