Yesterday was such a fun day for us in 4th grade! We had a visitor, Mr. Webster! Mr. Webster is from the Oneida tribe, and he came to share his culture with us. He brought cool things to show like a hat and tools and he even taught us a couple of dances. We were so excited for his visit. He even greeted us in the Oneida language!
Typically, in my teaching experience, I have had a block for each subject in the day-Reading time, Writing time, Social Studies time, you get the idea. But with more and more constraints being added to the day, that just wasn't feasible in the day. Not to mention the fact, that it didn't make sense to me. Reading shouldn't be looked at as a separate subject to be studied because it is in every subject! Therefore it should just work into everything! It is for that reason that my teaching partner and I have worked very hard to just integrate everything.
What does that look like? This week we are studying main idea as well as the three Native American tribes from Tennessee. So rather than teach main idea and pull some random passages, we are going to teach main idea with our Social Studies passages. Our kids will read about Native Americans then write the main idea of those passages. Two birds, one stone scenario here... Year 11 has begun, my second year at my new school! Clearly it has been a typical beginning of the year....EXHAUSTING....since we are starting on our second week of school and I am just now slowing down enough to update my site. Working full time with two small kids AIN'T NO JOKE!!!
I am very excited for my new group of fourths. We are off to a quick start and things are going well. It is always hard to get rolling as we all get to know each other and new procedures. But my kids are learning the way of my class super fast and I am learning more about them each day! Now, off to updating my site! |
